The rhyme is the most salient feature of the formal poetry written in English in recent centuries. But the most important feature, the feature that separates poetry like Milton's Paradise Lost in blank verse, is the pace.

There are three ways to establish a regular rhythm of poem:

1. You can count the syllables.
2. You can accent (accented syllables).
3. You can have two syllables and accents.

Poetry syllable is uncommon as a form of English origin, as English is strong. Old English (Anglo-Saxon) poetry (eg, Beowulf) has been rather accentual accentual-syllabic. Modern poets as Gerard Manley Hopkins and Thomas Hardy have also written poetry accented.
