The rhyme is the most salient feature of the formal poetry written in English in recent centuries. But the most important feature, the feature that separates poetry like Milton's Paradise Lost in blank verse, is the pace.

There are three ways to establish a regular rhythm of poem:

1. You can count the syllables.
2. You can accent (accented syllables).
3. You can have two syllables and accents.

Poetry syllable is uncommon as a form of English origin, as English is strong. A poet who writes in a counter of syllables How strictly syllabic account is on one line, without paying attention to stress. There is another, less known, how to set the pace in the poetry of English: counting the accents in place of accents and syllables. Some people perceive poetry accented May irregular and confused with free verse. However, unlike poetry free verse are the rules of accentuation. As you can see, there are four syllables in each line, the count and the position of unstressed syllables vary.

Old English (Anglo-Saxon) poetry (eg, Beowulf) has been rather accentual accentual-syllabic. Modern poets as Gerard Manley Hopkins and Thomas Hardy have also written poetry accented. The legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, in poetry JRR Tolkien, written in modern English accent, but the imitation of an old Norse style.
