For the action scenes in a game of basketball you need a digital SLR, probably with a telephoto lens. The cheapest that I recommend is the Nikon D40. Currently you can get one for under $ 500. Any non-SLR digital will shutterlag, a condition that is the picture of a second or two after pressing the button. Normally, it means you miss it!
