When we started the project on our website, we knew that the cost of proprietary software would be too high for our financial resources. Our only option then was to use open source software code.

However, in the open source software code it is spoiled for choice, and depends ita systems analyst / programmer to choose the most appropriate to project objectives.

In our case, we chose Linux as the operating system. However, we face a big question: What distribution of Linux? There are dozens of Linux distributions, each with its specific advantages, sometimes with or without payment for services.

We chose Slackware Linux because we believe is best suited to our needs in terms of stability and reliability. Slackware is a conservative distribution, meaning that only offered their versions of the core of the plot and the third party libraries, once it is established ita be stable and reliable. As a result, Slackware Linux is an operating system more stable market. If the user wants the latest Linux kernel and Libraries are encouraged to try different.

Another reason for choosing the Slackware, it is because of its interface text, which at first may be a little difficult in the long run, however, offered a better understanding of the Linux environment. Thus configuration Slackware is more done through text scripts.

For our database, chose Postgresql. As for the PHP programming language, we have used an object structure based on demand. There are many PHP application structures completely Open Source License Code. It also helps to maintain code in PHP Apart from HTML, with the help of some specific libraries such as Smarty. We use the Smarty library and we believe it is a very important resource, which can even make Web pages more quickly through the use of caching.

Also a library very important to note for the systems is the PHP PEAR library. In the PEAR website, among the many libraries that are available are the interface PP and Mail_Queue database, which sends emails using the database.

As we reached the end of our project, we have use some kind of replication of database in real time. To this end, we chose the DRBD and Heartbeat libraries. The use of the database data replication data is very important and should not be postponed. Just after 3 months our system went into production, our server hard disk became bad. Using DRBD / Heartbeat we were able to put the system into production within seconds, without losing data. DRBD / Heartbeat is the reproduction by using a wireless network between the server and slave nodes.

Our project also allows the use ImageMagick (enlarge and reduce images), iptables (firewall), TSearch2 (text search portgresql) and Mon (monitoring tasks of Linux).

Our website is already production and based on our experience, we can say that the free software, we chose, proved to be extremely reliable and stable. Code Open Source software can certainly be an excellent choice for the development site.
